Green Smoothies for Everyone!

After a great workout or long run through your neighborhood don’t you just love ending it off with a tall glass of a smoothie with things like strawberries, banana and spinach…what…… spinach? Yes, I did just say a smoothie with spinach in it! If you haven’t heard already green smoothies are one of the best ways to get your daily intake of greens plus all those great enzymes since it’s all RAW and you’re not cooking out any of the vitamins and minerals. And the best part is absolutely no cooking… just rinse, throw into blender and blend away, even the cleanup is easy.

What are green smoothies?

A green smoothie is really just any smoothie that contains fruit, leafy greens, and water. It’s so simple and yet so good for your body and wellbeing.

Believe it or not green smoothies actually taste great! If you don’t believe me try making one for a toddler or picky eater at home who doesn’t like eating their greens, they won’t notice the taste or difference. By blending your favourite greens like kale and spinach with fresh fruit you are covering up the leafy taste greens can have. By incorporating green smoothies into your daily routine you will notice a huge improvement in your overall health and mood. They are amazing food for your skin providing you with a rainbow of vitamins and minerals to give you that glow makeup or cleansers won’t. It’s also a great energy booster to help keep the blues away and brighten up your day.

Supplements like Greens Plus can get pricey and taste bitter, but if you’re using real fresh greens from the grocery store you will save some cash and enjoy the taste. On the go a lot? How could you possibly have time to consume all 7-8 servings of fruits and vegetables throughout the day? Easy, just blend them up in some smoothies and your ready to hit the road while enjoying a tasty meal.

Here are some advantages to green smoothies you might want to know!

  1. Lose weight naturally- Since your only adding in whole foods and not any of that processed sugar which comes in a lot of foods you eat, you will feel fuller longer.
  2. Consume more fruits and veggies- since your adding in handfuls of greens in each smoothie you will be able to consume the recommended daily intake of fruits and veggies.
  3. Better digestion- because you are blending your fruits and veggies, you are helping your body’s ability to absorb more nutrients from the food. And since your already breaking down the cellulose strands, your digestion system doesn’t have to work as hard to break it all down beforehand.
  4. Balance blood sugar- This will help to eliminate sugar cravings throughout the day that can ruin your efforts on a healthy diet plan.
  5. Eat raw- Most greens are best consumed while raw to get the full nutritional benefits.

One of my favourite concoctions for green smoothies:

-1 handful of frozen blueberries

-1 frozen banana (peeled of course)

-1 tbs of chia seeds

-1 tbs of goji berries

-1-2 handfuls of spinach

-Water (desired amount)

Blend this all up in a magic bullet or whichever blender you have and there you have your first green smoothie! This one may look a bit on the purple side because of the blueberries, but I promise it’s delicious and refreshing. Want another great smoothie recipe to try? Check out my  Papaya Mango smoothie recipe, it doesn’t contain greens in it, but don’t let that stop you from adding them in!

Just remember healthy dark greens are your friend and they will do wonders for your body and mind, so visit your closest farmer market or grocery store and pick some spinach and kale, and start blending up some green goodness!
